A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
